Domestic and Family Violence

Pregnancy is a time when violence towards women is known to increase. It may be the first time a woman experiences domestic violence or for someone already in an abusive relationship it is likely to escalate. Abuse can be verbal or physical including sexual abuse and occurs when a person uses aggression, threats, intimidation or force to control a partner or family member.

During pregnancy, many women are reluctant to leave their situation as they are financially vulnerable and are concerned about what their partner may do to them and their baby. If you are experiencing domestic violence during your pregnancy, it is important to seek help for the safety of both you and your baby.

This is an opportune time to seek help as you will have regular contact with health professionals such as your GP, obstetrician or midwife, who will be able to connect you with appropriate support and protection services.
